Hohenzollern Castle
The Story
Two earlier castles on this mountain crumbled before Crown Prince Frederick William of Prussia commissioned the current structure in 1846 as a monument to his dynasty's origins. The Hohenzollerns had risen from minor Swabian nobles to rule Prussia and eventually unite Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm I — and this castle was meant to honor that journey. It holds the personal effects of Frederick the Great and memorabilia of one of Europe's most consequential royal houses. Today it remains privately owned by the House of Hohenzollern.
