Mont-Saint-Michel
The Story
Legend holds that the archangel Michael appeared to a bishop in 708 AD, commanding him to build a chapel on this tidal rock off the Normandy coast. What began as a place of prayer became a fortress, a prison under Napoleon, and finally one of France's most visited landmarks. Monks, soldiers, pilgrims, and prisoners have all left their mark on its stones across thirteen centuries. Today it endures as proof that the most extraordinary places are those that took generations of devotion to create.
