Fasil Ghebbi
The Story
Emperor Fasilides founded Gondar in 1636 and built the first castle in this royal enclosure, establishing a permanent capital for the Ethiopian Empire after centuries of moving court. Successive emperors each added their own palace, church, or structure — creating a layered complex that grew across generations. At its height, Gondar was a major cultural and commercial center with a population of over 60,000. The castles were damaged during the Italian occupation in 1941 and survived further bombing, but their restoration by UNESCO has returned them to extraordinary condition.
