Carcassonne

The Story

Carcassonne's strategic position between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of France made it contested for over two millennia — Romans, Visigoths, Saracens, and French kings all fortified it in succession. Its darkest chapter came in 1209 when crusaders massacred much of its population during the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathar heresy. By the 19th century it had fallen into near ruin until architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc led its ambitious restoration — so faithful it became controversial. Today it is one of the most complete medieval fortified cities in the world.
